To book a driving test, use the official "Book your driving test" service on GOV.UK. You need your UK driving licence number, a debit or credit card and, for a car test, a theory test pass. The fee is £62 on weekdays or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays (as of October 2026). Since May 2026, only you can book and manage your test, so avoid anyone offering to do it for you.

This guide covers the booking process, the 2026 rule changes and the legitimate ways to find an earlier date.

What you need to book your driving test

  • Your UK driving licence number (from your provisional licence).
  • A theory test pass. You must normally pass the theory test before booking a car test.
  • A debit or credit card.
  • Your instructor's personal reference number (optional), if you want to check they're available on the day.
  • Residency: you must have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the 12 months before your test.

The online service is open from 6am to 11:40pm.

How to book: step by step

  1. Agree with your instructor that you're nearly ready, and check which dates they can do if you'll use their car.
  2. Go to GOV.UK and search "Book your driving test". Make sure the address starts with gov.uk.
  3. Enter your licence details and choose a test centre.
  4. Pick a date and time. New appointments are released 24 weeks ahead at 6am every Monday.
  5. Pay the fee and keep your confirmation email, which shows your deadline for changes and refunds.

The 2026 driving test booking rules

DVSA introduced new rules in 2026 to stop bots and resellers taking slots:

Date Rule
31 March 2026 You can make only 2 changes to a booked car test (it used to be 6). Changing several details at once counts as one change.
12 May 2026 Only the learner can book and manage their test. Instructors, unofficial booking services and cancellation-finder apps that scan the booking system are not allowed.
9 June 2026 You can only move your test to one of the 3 nearest test centres to where it's booked (or back to the centre you first booked).

If DVSA itself changes your test, your allowance resets to 2 changes. Breaking the terms can lead to your online access being suspended or your booking being cancelled.

How to find an earlier driving test (the legitimate way)

There's no official waiting list. Earlier slots, called cancellation appointments, appear whenever another learner changes or cancels, at any time during the week. To catch one:

  1. Check the official change service regularly, at different times of day.
  2. Have your details ready: your licence number and either your test reference or theory pass certificate number.
  3. Remember the nearest-centres rule. You can only move to one of the 3 nearest centres to where your test is booked.
  4. Use your changes wisely. With only 2 changes, don't move your test for a small gain.
  5. Consider a swap with another learner through DVSA's official phone process. Both of you must call on the same day, both need a change left, and the request must be at least 10 full working days before the earlier test.

Moving to a more expensive evening or weekend slot means paying the difference; moving to a weekday slot refunds the difference.

Why you should avoid resellers and bots

Unofficial services that resell tests or use automated tools to grab slots are against DVSA's rules. Using them can:

  • cost you far more than the official £62 or £75 fee
  • put your booking at risk of cancellation
  • expose your licence number and card details to strangers

Never give your card details or driving licence number to another learner or a third party. DVSA says it will never ask for your card's full number or security code.

Changing or cancelling your test

  • Give at least 10 full working days' notice to change a car test for free or cancel it for a refund. Monday to Saturday count as working days.
  • If you've used your 2 changes, you'll need to cancel and book a new test.
  • If your theory certificate is close to its 2-year expiry, book early. Our theory test guide explains the rules.

Are you really ready?

With long waits and limited changes, it's tempting to book as early as possible. Make sure you'll be ready by the date you choose. Read how many driving lessons you need, check yourself against the most common reasons for failing, and learn exactly what happens in the practical driving test.

Summary

Book your driving test only on GOV.UK with your licence number, theory pass and a card. Since 2026 you must book it yourself, you get 2 changes and you can only move to nearby centres. Look for cancellations through the official service and stay well away from resellers and bots.

Use the wait well with Co-Drive

Co-Drive is an iOS app for GB learners with practical test practice, show me/tell me questions, manoeuvre guides and a full mock drive marked the GB way, so you can keep improving while you wait for your test. It doesn't book tests, isn't affiliated with the DVSA and doesn't replace your instructor. Find out more.

Frequently asked questions

Can my driving instructor book my test for me?

No. Since 12 May 2026, only the learner can book and manage their own practical car test. Instructors and other third parties, including unofficial booking services, are not allowed to do it.

How many times can I change my driving test?

You can change a car driving test 2 times. Changing the date, time and test centre at once counts as one change. After that you must cancel and book a new test.

How much notice do I need to cancel my driving test for a refund?

For a car driving test you need to give at least 10 full working days' notice to change it for free or cancel for a refund. Sundays and public holidays don't count as working days.

Is there a waiting list for earlier driving tests?

No. Cancellation appointments appear whenever someone changes or cancels, so you need to check the official GOV.UK service yourself. New appointments are released 24 weeks ahead at 6am every Monday.

Can I swap my driving test with someone else?

Yes, through DVSA's official swap process by phone. Both learners must call separately on the same day, it counts as one of your 2 changes, and you should never share your card details or licence number with the other person.
